Printed Acoustical Panels

Sound absorption meets stunning visual design

At a Glance

OrangePiel acoustic panels achieve NRC 0.85 noise reduction — absorbing 85 percent of sound energy — on rigid fiberglass or recycled-PET cores wrapped in a printed, acoustically transparent fabric. Panels test to ASTM C423 for acoustic performance and ASTM E84 Class A for fire. Individual panels run up to 48 × 96 inches; wall-scale acoustic murals assemble to 16 × 170 feet. Dye-sublimation at up to 1440 DPI puts any photograph, artwork, or brand graphic on the absorbing surface without reducing the NRC. Two-to-four-week lead time, free ground shipping. Printed and assembled in Richmond, Virginia since 2006.

Custom printed acoustic panels and acoustic murals that combine NRC 0.85 sound absorption with your artwork. From individual panels to full-wall acoustic murals.

Custom printed acoustical panels combine professional-grade sound absorption with the visual impact of large-format custom printing. These panels solve two problems simultaneously: they reduce unwanted noise and echo in your space while serving as striking decorative elements that display your photography, artwork, or brand imagery.

The core of each panel consists of high-density acoustic fiberglass or recycled polyester fiber, providing exceptional sound absorption across a wide frequency range. Our panels achieve Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) ratings up to 0.85, meaning they absorb 85% of the sound energy that hits them—excellent performance for controlling echo, reducing noise transmission, and improving speech intelligibility.

The printed fabric facing is acoustically transparent, meaning sound passes through to the absorptive core without any reduction in acoustic performance. This allows you to enjoy both beautiful custom imagery and professional-level sound control without compromise.

Every panel is manufactured to order in our US facility, with sizes ranging from small 12" x 12" accent pieces to large 48" x 96" statement panels. Panels can be wall-mounted using Z-clips or French cleats for easy installation and removal, suspended from ceilings as clouds or baffles, or placed on freestanding frames for portable room division.

Acoustic cores available in rigid fiberglass (highest performance) or recycled polyester fiber (eco-friendly option made from post-consumer plastic bottles). Both core materials are wrapped in acoustically transparent printed fabric that allows sound to pass through to the absorptive core.
Dye-sublimation printing infuses ink into the polyester fabric at the molecular level. The result is vibrant, durable imagery that won't crack, peel, or fade. Print resolution up to 1440 DPI captures fine details and smooth gradients.
Printed panels are designed for long-term installation. The dye-sublimated fabric resists fading and can be vacuumed with a brush attachment for routine cleaning. Avoid moisture and harsh chemicals. Panels can be removed and reinstalled using Z-clip mounting.
5-year warranty covering manufacturing defects, acoustic performance, and print quality under normal indoor use.

The Science of Sound Absorption

Sound absorption occurs when sound waves enter a porous material and lose energy through friction as they pass through the material's fiber structure. The lost energy converts to tiny amounts of heat, effectively removing sound from the room. This is different from soundproofing, which blocks sound from passing between spaces.

Our acoustic panels excel at absorbing mid and high-frequency sounds—the range that includes most speech, music, and common noise sources. The NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating indicates the percentage of sound absorbed: our 0.85 NRC panels absorb 85% of incident sound energy. This dramatically reduces echo, improves speech intelligibility, and creates more comfortable acoustic environments.

For spaces with significant low-frequency issues (bass rumble, HVAC noise), we recommend 2" thick panels, which provide better absorption below 250 Hz. Corner placement also improves low-frequency performance by intercepting bass waves before they build up in room corners.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many panels do I need for my room?

Coverage depends on room size, current acoustic issues, and goals. For general improvement in offices and restaurants, covering 15-25% of wall surface area makes a significant difference. Recording studios and critical listening rooms may require 30-50% coverage. We offer free acoustic consultation to help calculate your needs.

Does printing on the fabric reduce acoustic performance?

No. The printed fabric is acoustically transparent, meaning sound passes through just as easily as with unprinted fabric. You get the full acoustic performance of the panel core regardless of the printed design.

Can panels be removed and reinstalled?

Yes. Our standard Z-clip mounting allows easy removal without damaging the panel or wall. Panels can be reinstalled in the same or different locations. This is ideal for renters or evolving spaces.

Are these panels suitable for ceilings?

Absolutely. Ceiling-mounted panels (called "clouds") are very effective for reducing echo and noise. We offer suspension hardware for horizontal mounting and angled positions.

What's the difference between 1" and 2" thick panels?

1" panels are effective for mid and high frequencies (speech, most music). 2" panels extend absorption to lower frequencies, making them better for spaces with bass issues, HVAC rumble, or critical listening applications. 2" panels also have slightly higher NRC ratings.

What's the difference between acoustic foam and fiberglass panels for sound absorption?

Fiberglass panels absorb significantly more low-frequency sound than acoustic foam of the same thickness. At the low end (125-250 Hz — the frequencies that cause "boomy" rooms and muddy speech on video calls), a 2" fiberglass panel absorbs roughly 70-90% of incoming sound energy; a 2" acoustic foam panel absorbs 15-30% at the same frequencies. Mid and high frequencies are more evenly absorbed by both, so for speech-only environments the performance gap narrows.

Our printed acoustic panels use either rigid fiberglass (highest performance) or high-density recycled polyester (eco-friendly, comparable NRC, slightly less low-frequency absorption). Both significantly outperform foam while giving you a printable, decorative surface. Foam panels are generally unsuitable for printing because the open-cell surface distorts imagery.

Are printed acoustic panels suitable for classrooms, schools, and educational facilities?

Yes — schools are one of our most common commercial applications. Classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, libraries, and gymnasiums typically suffer from long reverberation times that hurt speech intelligibility; the Acoustical Society of America recommends reverberation times under 0.6 seconds for K-12 learning environments, and our NRC 0.85 panels are the fastest way to hit that target. Class A fire rating (ASTM E84) meets standard school building codes.

We work with school districts, architects, and facilities teams on projects from single classrooms to full campus rollouts. Custom printing lets each school put its mascot, motto, or student artwork on the panels — so the acoustic upgrade doubles as a branding and pride-of-place opportunity. Volume pricing applies for orders of 10+ panels; trade accounts are available for architects and designers specifying at scale.

Can printed acoustic panels be used in hospitals, healthcare, and medical offices?

Yes, and hospitals use them heavily to reduce noise-related patient stress and improve staff communication. Waiting rooms, nurse stations, therapy rooms, and multi-bed inpatient spaces all benefit from NRC 0.85 absorption to bring noise floors closer to HIPAA-aligned privacy levels and the Facility Guidelines Institute's recommended acoustic environments.

Our printed fabric facing is cleanable with standard medical-grade disinfectants when the core is the rigid fiberglass option (the recycled polyester core should not be wet-cleaned). Class A fire rating and low-VOC construction meet hospital and clinic building codes. For patient-facing installations, healing-nature imagery, abstract calming patterns, and local artwork are popular print choices that research associates with lower patient anxiety.

Is "acoustic wallpaper" the same as printed acoustic panels or acoustic murals?

They are related but distinct products. True acoustic wallpaper is a thin (typically 2-3mm) textured paper or fabric applied directly to a wall, providing very modest sound absorption (NRC around 0.1-0.3) and serving primarily as decorative noise-dampening for already-acoustically-treated spaces. Printed acoustic panels are 1-2" thick wall-mounted units with NRC 0.85+ — full-strength acoustic treatment with a custom-printed decorative face.

For real acoustic problems (echo, boomy rooms, poor video call audio), panels are roughly 3-5x more effective than wallpaper. If your project is primarily decorative with a small noise reduction nice-to-have, wallpaper can be enough; for genuine acoustic treatment or commercial code compliance, panels are the right tool. We also offer printed acoustic murals which are panels assembled into larger floor-to-ceiling wall treatments, combining the aesthetic of wallpaper with the performance of panels.

How many acoustic panels do I need to treat a room?

A common rule of thumb: cover 15-25% of the total wall-plus-ceiling area with NRC 0.85 panels for moderate echo problems, and 30-40% for severe reverberation or recording-grade acoustic control. For a standard 12' × 15' conference room with 9' ceilings (about 666 sq ft of wall + ceiling), that's roughly 100-160 sq ft of panels — around six to ten 24"×48" panels spread across multiple surfaces.

Panel placement matters as much as quantity. Prioritize the first reflection points (walls directly left and right of a speaker, or opposite a primary sound source), the back wall of a long room, and ceiling clouds above conference tables. Our team provides placement recommendations with any order of 4+ panels — send us a room sketch or floor plan and we will draft a treatment diagram at no cost.
