Choosing the Right Fabric: A Guide to Our Material Options

Daniel McCool

Founder & Creative Director, OrangePiel

Material Matters

The fabric behind a custom printed shade or mural does more than hold ink. It determines how light passes through your space, how long the product lasts, how it feels to the touch, and how it performs in different environments. Choosing the wrong material can undermine even the most beautiful design.

After nearly two decades of testing, refining, and field-testing materials in real installations, here's what we recommend and why.

Light-Filtering Fabrics

Light-filtering fabrics are our most versatile option. They reduce glare and UV exposure while still allowing soft, diffused natural light into the room. The printed image appears vibrant from the interior side and translucent from the exterior, creating an interesting dual effect.

Best for: Living rooms, offices, restaurants, and any space where you want to maintain a connection to natural daylight while controlling intensity. Particularly effective for west-facing windows that receive strong afternoon sun.

Considerations: Light-filtering fabrics provide privacy during the day but become transparent at night when interior lights are on. If nighttime privacy is needed, pair with a secondary blackout shade or choose our dual-roller system.

Blackout Fabrics

Our blackout fabrics block 100% of visible light. They're the densest material in our lineup, which means they hold print detail exceptionally well and produce the most saturated colors. The printed image has a slightly matte finish that reads like a gallery canvas.

Best for: Bedrooms, media rooms, conference rooms, hotel guest rooms, and any space where complete light control is essential. Also ideal for TV concealing shades, where the printed artwork needs to look its best as a permanent design element.

Considerations: Blackout fabrics are heavier, which affects the roller mechanism sizing. For very large spans (over 10 feet wide), we may recommend a motorized system to ensure smooth, consistent operation.

Sheer Fabrics

Sheers offer the lightest possible intervention—they soften harsh sunlight and provide a degree of daytime privacy while maintaining an airy, open feel. Printed imagery on sheer fabric has an ethereal, watercolor-like quality that's distinctive and sophisticated.

Best for: Spaces where maximum light is desired, or where the shade serves primarily as a decorative element rather than a functional light blocker. Popular for restaurants, retail spaces, and residential rooms with beautiful views you don't want to obscure.

Considerations: Sheers provide minimal UV protection and no nighttime privacy. Print detail is softer than on denser fabrics, so we recommend bolder, simpler imagery rather than highly detailed photography.

Specialty Materials

For wall murals, we offer vinyl wallcovering rated for commercial use (Type II classification), as well as a removable fabric option for residential installations or spaces where flexibility is important. Both accept our high-resolution printing process with excellent results.

How to Decide

Start with function, then refine for aesthetics. Ask yourself: What does this window or wall need to do? Control light? Provide privacy? Create a visual focal point? The answer narrows your material options quickly, and we're always available to walk you through the specifics for your space.

We send free material samples to every client before production begins. There's no substitute for seeing and touching the actual fabric in your actual space.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fabric types are available for custom printed window shades?

OrangePiel offers three primary fabric categories: light filtering (reduces glare and UV while admitting soft natural light), blackout (blocks 100% of light for complete room darkening), and sheer (maintains view and maximum light with subtle printed overlay). Each category includes multiple substrate options varying in texture, weight, and performance characteristics.

How do I choose between light filtering and blackout fabric?

Choose blackout for bedrooms, home theaters, nurseries, and any space requiring complete darkness or maximum privacy. Choose light filtering for living rooms, kitchens, offices, and spaces where you want natural light with reduced glare and UV. Many clients use both—blackout in bedrooms and light filtering elsewhere—with coordinated prints across all shades.

Does the fabric type affect how a printed design looks?

Yes, significantly. Blackout fabrics produce the richest, most saturated colors because no light passes through—ideal for photographic reproductions. Light-filtering fabrics create a luminous, backlit effect where colors glow when sun passes through—beautiful for abstract and nature designs. Sheer fabrics show designs as translucent overlays with the view visible behind—best for bold, simple graphics.

Are the printing inks safe for homes with children and pets?

Yes. OrangePiel's UV-cured inks are zero-VOC, free of heavy metals, and produce no off-gassing. GREENGUARD Gold certified fabric options are available for sensitive environments. The cured print surface is smooth, stable, and safe for contact in residential settings.
