UV-Cured Ink Technology

Unlike conventional solvent-based or water-based inks, UV-cured inks are instantly hardened (cured) by ultraviolet light immediately after being deposited on the fabric. This process offers significant advantages:

  • Instant adhesion: Ink bonds permanently to the fabric surface the moment it's cured, with no drying time or off-gassing
  • Vibrant color: UV inks sit on top of the fabric rather than being absorbed, producing brighter, more saturated colors
  • Durability: Cured inks resist scratching, fading, and moisture far better than conventional printed inks
  • Fabric preservation: The instant-cure process doesn't saturate the fabric, preserving its light-filtering properties and texture

White Ink: Expanding Creative Possibilities

White ink printing is a capability that dramatically expands what's possible with custom shades:

  • Printing on dark fabrics: Without white ink, CMYK colors appear muddy on dark or colored base fabrics. White ink creates an opaque base layer that allows vibrant colors on any fabric color.
  • Variable opacity: By controlling white ink density, we can create designs that range from fully opaque to semi-transparent within the same shade.
  • Backlit effects: Strategic white ink placement controls how light passes through the fabric, creating luminous effects when sunlight hits the shade.

How Fabric Affects Print Quality

The same image will look different on different shade fabrics:

  • Smooth, tight-weave fabrics: Produce the sharpest detail and most accurate color reproduction—ideal for photographs and fine art
  • Textured fabrics: Add a natural, artistic quality to printed images but may soften fine details
  • Open-weave (solar screen) fabrics: Allow see-through visibility but reduce print density. Best for bold graphics rather than detailed photos
  • Blackout fabrics: Provide the richest, most saturated colors with highest contrast due to their opaque backing

Color Management Process

Accurate color reproduction requires sophisticated color management:

  1. ICC profiling: Each fabric type has its own color profile that accounts for how it absorbs and reflects ink
  2. Soft proofing: Digital previews simulating how colors will appear on the specific fabric
  3. Physical proofing: A printed sample on actual production fabric for final approval
  4. Batch calibration: Regular printer calibration ensures consistency across orders and over time

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the printed design fade over time in sunlight?

UV-cured inks are specifically engineered for fade resistance in sun-exposed applications. Under normal residential or commercial conditions, our printed shades maintain their color vibrancy for 7-10+ years. The UV-curing process creates a chemical bond with the fabric that is significantly more lightfast than conventional printing methods.

Can you print on any roller shade fabric?

We can print on most roller shade fabrics, including polyester, fiberglass, PVC-coated, and blended materials. Some specialty fabrics with extreme textures or chemical coatings may require testing. We always recommend a print test on your selected fabric before committing to production.

What file format produces the best print quality?

For photographic images: TIFF or PSD files at 300 DPI in CMYK color mode. For logos and graphics: vector files (AI, EPS, SVG) which can scale to any size without quality loss. We accept most common image formats and our design team will advise if your files need optimization.

Is the printing process environmentally friendly?

Yes. UV-cured printing is one of the most environmentally responsible commercial printing methods. The process produces zero VOC emissions, uses no water, generates minimal waste, and the inks contain no hazardous air pollutants. It's a significant environmental improvement over traditional solvent-based fabric printing.
