Complete Printed Shade Installation Guide
Installing your custom printed window shade is a straightforward process that most homeowners complete in 30-60 minutes per shade. This comprehensive guide covers every step from unpacking to final adjustments, ensuring your shade operates perfectly and looks beautiful for years to come.
Your printed shade arrives fully assembled with the fabric already attached to the roller tube and all hardware included. You will need a few basic tools: a cordless drill with drill bits, Phillips head screwdriver, level, measuring tape, pencil, and a step stool or ladder for high windows.
Before You Begin
Unpack and Inspect
Carefully remove your shade from the packaging and inspect for any shipping damage. Unroll the shade partially to verify your printed image looks correct. Check that all hardware is included: mounting brackets, screws, wall anchors (if applicable), cord/chain tensioner, and installation instructions. Report any damage or missing items before proceeding with installation.
Gather Your Tools
For most installations you will need: cordless drill with 1/8-inch drill bit, Phillips head screwdriver or drill bit, bubble level or laser level, steel measuring tape, pencil for marking, and appropriate step stool or ladder. For masonry or tile installation, you will also need a hammer drill with masonry bit and masonry anchors.
Review Your Mount Type
Confirm whether you ordered inside mount (shade fits within window frame) or outside mount (shade mounts on wall above and around window). The installation process differs slightly for each mount type. Check your order confirmation if unsure.
Inside Mount Installation
For shades that fit within the window frame
Mark Bracket Positions
Hold brackets inside the window frame at the top corners, 2-3 inches from each end of the shade. Use a pencil to mark screw hole positions. Verify brackets are level with each other.
Pre-Drill Pilot Holes
Using a 1/8-inch drill bit, drill pilot holes at each marked position. For wood frames, drill approximately 1 inch deep. For drywall, drill through and install wall anchors.
Mount the Brackets
Secure brackets to the window frame using the provided screws. Tighten firmly but avoid over-tightening which can strip the holes. Verify brackets are level.
Install the Shade
Hold the shade with the printed side facing the room. Snap or slide the headrail into the mounted brackets. Most brackets have a spring-loaded clip that clicks when the shade is fully seated.
Test Operation
Operate the shade through several full raise and lower cycles. Verify smooth operation and that the shade rolls evenly. Adjust bracket positions if the shade pulls to one side.
Install Safety Device
Mount the cord or chain tensioner to the window frame or wall to keep the operating mechanism taut and away from children. This is required by safety regulations.
Outside Mount Installation
For shades that mount above and around the window
Locate Mounting Position
Determine where brackets will mount on the wall or trim above the window. Position should center the shade over the window. Allow at least 2-3 inches above the window frame for the rolled-up shade.
Find Solid Mounting
Use a stud finder to locate wall studs. Mounting into studs provides the strongest installation. If studs are not available at bracket positions, plan to use toggle bolts or heavy-duty wall anchors.
Mark and Level
Hold brackets at the mounting position and mark screw holes. Use a level to verify both brackets are at exactly the same height. For wide shades, additional center support brackets may be needed.
Drill and Mount Brackets
Drill pilot holes and install appropriate fasteners. For studs, use the provided wood screws. For drywall without studs, install toggle bolts or anchors first, then mount brackets.
Install Shade and Test
Click the shade headrail into brackets, verify secure attachment, and test operation. Adjust if needed for level hanging and smooth operation.
Special Installation Situations
Mounting into Tile or Stone
For tile, stone, or masonry surfaces, use a hammer drill with a masonry bit to drill holes. Insert masonry anchors (plastic or lead) and mount brackets with the appropriate screws. Drill slowly to avoid cracking tile. Consider drilling through grout lines when possible.
Mounting into Metal Frames
For aluminum or steel window frames, use self-tapping sheet metal screws. Pre-drill with a metal bit slightly smaller than the screw diameter. Apply thread-locking compound to prevent screws from loosening over time.
Ceiling Mount for Shade Dividers
When mounting shades as room dividers from the ceiling, locate ceiling joists using a stud finder. Mount brackets directly into joists whenever possible. If mounting between joists, use toggle bolts rated for the shade weight plus operating force.
Motorized Shade Installation
Motorized shades install similarly to manual shades. Battery-powered motors require no additional wiring—simply charge the battery pack before installation and mount as normal. Hardwired motors require electrical work by a licensed electrician before shade installation. Ensure power is run to the mounting location before installing brackets.
Troubleshooting Installation Issues
Solutions to common problems
Shade Pulls to One Side
Brackets are not level. Remove shade, adjust bracket heights until perfectly level, and reinstall.
Shade Does Not Roll Evenly
The fabric may have shifted on the roller. Contact us for instructions on fabric realignment or replacement.
Chain/Cord is Too Long
Extra chain length is normal. The tensioner device will hold excess taut. Shorten only if specifically needed.
Brackets Feel Loose
Screws may be in drywall without anchors. Remove screws, install appropriate wall anchors, and remount.
Installation FAQs
Yes, most shades up to 60 inches wide can be installed by one person. For wider shades, a helper is useful to hold the shade level while securing it in the brackets. Heavy motorized shades may also benefit from a second person.
