Artist Information
Born and raised in northeast Georgia, I began photographing in 1987 during my first year of college. In school, at the University of Georgia, I was mainly interested in trying to capture larger views of my subjects. It wasn?t until after I graduated that I began to fully appreciate the camera?s ability to isolate the details of a scene.
Some of the most influential photographers in my life have come from the Group f64 era in photography?s history, especially Ansel Adams and the Westons. However, a lot of my color work has been influenced by photographers like Eric Meola and Jay Maisel; photographers that are often considered to belong strictly to the commercial sphere. I appreciate how some photographers during the 70s and 80s began using color film to record images that emphasize the color contrast that was a part of their subjects, as opposed to using color to simply describe their subjects.
I have exhibited in the Atlanta area and across the southeast where my work is represented in several corporate collections such as King & Spalding, LLP and the Shepherd Center Foundation. My wife and I currently reside in Atlanta.
My Style
Most of my photographs are of quiet details that are located in densely populated, noisy surroundings. What I try to do when isolating a particular detail from its surroundings is to create a kind of pictorial meditation on that detail. The contrast between the subject and its environment is what draws me in and piques my interest in making a photograph.
